On Saturday, Nov. 16th, 1901, Federal
Marshalls John A. Montgomery and Hugh Montgomery
were shot, dismembered, and their bodies burned
inside the home of Will Mathis.
The Montgomerys had been sent by the Federal
officials to arrest Will Mathis for moonshining.
After they served the warrant late in the
afternoon, Mathis convinced the men to spend the
night, so he could finish slaughtering a hog.
That night, the Montgomerys were killed in their
beds as they slept in the Mathis home. Four men
were accused of the crime - Will Mathis, his
father-in-law Whit Owens, his friend Bill Jackson,
and his servant Orlando Lester. Each man denied his
involvement and implicated the other three. Until
his execution, Will Mathis proclaimed his
innocence.
