Teen Suspense Novels
Question:
Hi! I think I\'ve read all of your teen suspense novels, and I could read them over and over again. Even though they were written a while ago, I can still relate to them and enjoy them because even though the technology has changed, the characters are still very common in this time. I also read WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER, and I\'m giving it to the librarian at my high school to read. My question to you is-did you like writing these suspense novels as much as I liked reading them?

Thank you for enjoying those books. Yes, I loved writing them. Until my own teenage daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette, was murdered. Then that subject matter became unbearable for me to write about, so I switched over to other types of writing.

Thank you, Julie, but please don't wait! I'm not a "one trick pony." When my first grandchild, Erin, was born, I searched for a tape of lullabies for her and couldn't find anything I liked. So, as a welcome-to-the-world gift, my oldest daughter Robin Arquette, (a professional musician and Erin's aunt), and I created our own original lullabies, "Songs from Dreamland." I wrote the lyrics and narrated the CD; Robin composed the music and performed the vocals and instrumentals. Go to http://www.lullabysongs.net/ to hear clips from them and also from our second CD, "Our Beautiful Day", which we later created for preschoolers. (I even performed the sound effects, including the barking dog and the child rinsing her teeth and spitting into the sink as she brushed her teeth at bedtime).

Question:
Are you willing to right more AWESOME books?
Asked on Sunday, August 08, 2010 at 12:54:29 PM
Reply:
That's an interesting question, because what one reader considers "awesome," another reader may not relate to. It depends on the maturity and particular likes and dislikes of the reader.
In your case, you love NEWS FOR DOGS. So you're an age to love MOVIE FOR DOGS and then move on to one slightly higher level, A GIFT OF MAGIC.
Then you'll move on into middle school. That's when you may find my young adult suspense novels interestiing, (you're probably not ready for them now). Then, once you're in high school, you'll be ready for WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, a very strong, non-fiction book about the murder of my own teenage daughter and our family's personal search for her killer.
But you shouldn't be reading those books now. "For everything there is a season." You're now in the "season" of life to enjoy the dog trilogy, and I'm so glad that you do.

Dogs series
Question:
Are there only 3 books in the "Dogs" series? (Hotel for Dogs, News for Dogs and Movies for Dogs)
Asked on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 04:38:34 AM
Reply:
Yes, it's a trilogy.
In the third book, MOVIE FOR DOGS, Andi is 12 and Bruce is 14 and has a girlfriend. In a fourth book, they would have to be 13 and 15, which would move them out of the "Juvenile book" genre and make them "young adult."

Question:
I am curious about why the references to "Rock Hudson" were changed to "Tab Hunter" in the new edition of They Never Came Home. I appreciate any information!

I know nothing about this. The publisher must have arbitrarily made this change without consulting me. I had no idea (1) that there was a new edition of They Never Came Home and (2) that my books could be changed without my permission.
I will definitely look into this. thank you for informing me.

A Question
Question:
Dear Mrs. Duncan,
I absolutely looooooooooove your books! My dream is to be a writer one day, too! I've been wondering, though, since you have so many books published, did you write each book one at a time? Or did you ever start one, put it aside, start another, and then go back to the other one to finish it?
Thanks for all of your amazing novels!

The answer is "yes" to both questions. I do write one book at a time. However, there have been times when I have started writing a book, gotten about a third of a way into it, and realized it simply wasn't working. In those cases I've set the partial manuscripts away and started on a different project. Later, when that second project is completed, I can sometimes go back to the unfinished manuscript, read it with fresh eyes, and see where the problems lie. Then, I'm often able to pick it up, make changes, and move on with it.
One such book was STRANGER WITH MY FACE. After writing several chapters, I realized the story wasn't working, but I didn't know why. I laid it away, wrote other things, and eventually returned to it and saw how to fix it. Originally I had been writing the story in third person. It needed the intimacy of Laurie's voice telling the story in first person. That made all the difference.

Re-discovering your books
Question:
Hi Lois,
I hope this message finds you well and happy.
I first read your books when I was 14 or 15 years old. I am now 36 and just decided to get them all again from Amazon. I just finished "Locked in Time", "Stranger with my Face" & "The eyes of Karen Connors" (as it's called here in the UK). I have "Don't look behind you" lined up to read next.
These books are every bit as good now as they were back then to my eager 15 year old self, when I was soaking up every single last word. They have really stood the test of time. But I tell you something, the book I was never able to forget, the one which always sticks with me is Laurie & Lia's story - Stranger with My face. Is Lia still out there in the ether somewhere, who knows!? You certainly know how to get someone's mind ticking over with endless thoughts & possibilities.
I can't wait to read the rest of my stash of books....it's making me feel very young again! Ha!
All the best,
Lisa Washington
Age 36 & 2 months :-)

Hi, my name is Mary and I am 15. I love writing, and your books have given me SO much inspiration, I couldn't thank you enough if I tried. Your books have taught me the saying "Never judge a book by it's cover". Thank you so much!

They're being republished with new covers, so maybe that saying will no longer apply. (At least, it will get rid of that thumbnail picture of an insane fisherman with an ice hook on the current cover of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER -- a character who was in the movie but not in my book.

Question:
Your books are more than wonderful! Each one catches my breath in a new way. I'm 12 now, but I started reading your books last year. I can't tell you how much I enjoy them. Each book I read pulls me into a different world that has me holding my breath for as long as possible. I never want to put down your books, adn I'm still looking for more. I've only read a few, but I'm hooked. I was wondering where I could find a copy of your first book. I know it will be great because you wrote it.
It would mean the world to me if you replied, so please do. I hope to meet you soon, so I was wondering where I could meet you. It would mean a lot to me

That first book DEBUTANTE HILL, is so long out of print that I don't even have a copy myself. The person who posted below found a copy somewhere, maybe on E-bay.
But please don't both looking for it. It was not an especially good book, it was sort of a "practice book." My first attempt at a novel. It's very old fashioned and not a suspense novel.

Debutante Hill
Question:
Hi Mrs. Duncan,
I just finished reading "Debutante Hill". I had written you years ago as to whether you had a copy of your first book as I had wanted to read it and was unable to find a copy. At the time you only had your manuscript! I was able to locate it recently.
One of the themes in the book that I think is so important for girls to learn is how you shouldn't lower your standards for a boy, instead you should set them high so that these boys (and men) can aspire to be a better person if they really want you in their life (or someone like you). Nowadays men are very lazy when it comes to who they are and how they persue women. It's sad really.
Having read the book, I can agree with your comments on updating your earlier books. You are right that most people do not call their parents "Mother" or "Father." I think it is a great way to have a new generation read your books. I'm 36 and I still read them from time to time. Third Eye is my favorite by far.
By the way, I have your book about writing (I am an aspiring writer myself) and I was trying to show my sister the paper you wrote for home economics that you ended up sending to a magazine but I couldn't find it (it was hilarious and speaks to my heart as I myself have broken every sewing machine I've ever used). Could you tell me what page it is on?
Thanks so much for your time and your talent!

I can't believe you found a copy of the first book I ever wrote! It was published in 1957! Truthfully, I can hardly remember what it was about, but I'll never forget how excited I was when I saw it in print WITH MY OWN NAME ON THE JACKET!
The article you are thinking about, "Home Economics Report," was not in HOW TO WRITE AND SELL YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, which is probably the book you showed your sister. It was in my autobiography, CHAPTERS: MY GROWTH AS A WRITER, which is also out of print.

Hi!
Question:
Hey, Mrs. Duncan.
I really love your books. The first book I read by you was "Down a Dark Hall" and I really liked it. It really got me into your books, now I've read 11 and I'm about to start "Hotel For Dogs". I have already seen the movie, I really liked it too.
I read your poem "The song Of Life" and I thought it was great. Its amazing you were that good of a writer at age 12.
I have a few questions,
-How old were you when you wrote your first book?
-Do you like the book "Hotel For Dogs" or the movie better?
-Who was your favorite book and writer when you were 12?
-When can we exspect the updated versions of your books?
-After the updates, what is next in your career?
Sorry for so many questions. Thank you for writing such good books (Your books were what got me into to suspence books) and thanks for answering my questions. Your awesome!

I wrote my first book when I was 20, but it was several years before it was published.
As the author, of course, I like the book HOTEL FOR DOGS better, because it's more realistic. But the movie is very cute, and I can see how all those sensational effects would have greater appeal to kid audiences.
I don't recall who my favorite writer was when I was twelve. That's far too long back to remember.
The updated versioons of KILLING MR. GRIFFIN, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER will be published this coming fall. Then three more books in spring 2011; two more in fall 2011; and two more in spring 2012. They're spacing them out.
Next in my career, I hope, will be the publication of THE TALLY KEEPER, which is the sequal to WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, the true story of my own daughter's murder.

Locked in TIme Movie???
Question:
I was just reading some of the older posts on this website and I saw someone ask when the LOCKED IN TIME movie was premiering. You responded that you didn't know yet. Is there going to be a movie? Its one of my favorite books and that would be so amazing! Are there any other possible moves to be?

The Lifetime Network has optioned LOCKED IN TIME. However, they haven't yet started filming, and I never believe a movie will actually be made until that has happened.
DOWN A DARK HALL has been optioned by a well-known script writer, who has written the film strip. He is currently in the process of marketing it to studios. So, can't know for sure about that one either, although I have read his script and think it's good.

Your New Books
Question:
Your books have made me who I am today. When I first heard that you were updating them, I was shocked and still am. Your books are classics, and who cares if they're old fashioned? What was your first opinion when you were asked to update them? Do you think that they will become more popular? I can tell you that your books still live. They are almost always checked out at my school library. Do you think that it is a good idea to update them? Do you think that kids won't read a book that takes place a few years ago?
I'm sorry if this sounds at all rude. If it does, its just because your books are my favorite prized possessions. It is just because I don't want the magic in them to be ruined.
Thank you.

Thank you for your thoughtful post. I promise, the magic won't be ruined. The characters and the plots won't be changed, and in certain books, there will hardly be any changes at all.
But times have changed, and there are certain things that readers today would find odd about books that were written 25 years ago. Why can't the girls in DOWN A DARK HALL use their cell phones or computer e-mail to contact the outside world and tell people what's happening to them at that school? How can a witch, (who, in SUMMER OF FEAR, can't be photographed) take a plane trip, when today you need a photo ID? Explanations need to be found for things like that. And how many kids today call their parents 'Mother" and 'Father"? Today that sounds unnatural. They'd be "Mom" and "Dad."
But those are cosmetic changes. They don't change the stories. In fact, in a way, they enrich them.

Just a note.
Question:
I'm in the ninth grade, and over the past few years I fell in love with your books. you have your own section at our school library and i read all of them. Until today, I found "Who killed my daughter," in the non fiction section. I was in a rush to find a book before class ended, so i quickly scanned the back of the book, and signed it out. Later on in class, I actually sat down and looked closely at it. Then I saw your name. Which only made me want to read it more. Personally I thought that you wrote this story for someone else. Then I read "today, lois Duncan is still searching for her daughters killer. She will never give up." And i was so shocked. I asked my teacher about it, and we looked it up on the internet. After we read a bit on it, i sat down for the rest of the class, and not one peep came out of my mouth as i read. That was a little after 1 pm. It's now 8:39 and I'm still reading. I couldn't help but feel a rush of emotion, imagining someone going through that. I think you're extremely brave for publishing the book and showing the world what happened. I can't put it down. It makes me angry, upset, and happy all at the same time. Out of all your books, none of them have made such an impact, i guess you could say. Knowing its real, and its coming from an author i love, it was insane.
But I plan on atleast attempting to finish that book tonight. It'd mean the world to me if you replied.
Keep writing, Lois!
yours truly,
me.
