Don't Look Behind You

Question: Hi Lois, I just read your book Don't Look Behind You, and it's wonderful! I love the twists and turns and how descriptive everything is. Is it made-up or an exaggerated version of a real-life event?

[From: Patrick]

Asked on Friday, February 03, 2012 at 07:10:47 AM
Reply: DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU was fiction, based upon facts I knew at the time I wrote it, after consulting with a former member of the FBI. But I've since heard from two kids whose families really are in the Witness Protection Program, and what I wrote was not exaggerated -- the situation for such families is far worse than I portrayed it.

Book Report.... :(

Question: Alright so, My 8th grade English Teacher has assigned me a project. She told me i have to give five major reasons why you most likely wrote the book Ransom....
(Which i liked VERY much by the way!)
Anyway, is there any way you could help me out on this? Plus, i bet i would get a little extra credit, if she knew that i actually talked to you about it! :)
Please and Thank you....
Hannah..

Asked on Friday, February 03, 2012 at 07:09:58 AM
Reply: Hello, Hannah,

Well, you do get extra credit because you have talked to me.

But I can't think of any reason for having written that book so many years ago that I can hardly remember writing it, except that I'm a professional author and telling stories is what I do.

Reply: SUMMER OF FEAR was a made-for-TV movie a number of years ago, under the title STRANGER IN OUR HOUSE. It may still be available as a DVD, but I doubt it since it is so old now. It starred Linda Blaire.

Dear Lois,

Question: Hello my name is Ryan i have a question,Did the people who made the movie I know what you did last summer ask you if they could make the movie and change almost everything about the story? Because i read the book and watched the movie, i thought the book was great but, the movie was bad. Collie wasnt even in the movie.there was a fisherman with a hook. and berry and hellen die!

Asked on Wednesday, February 01, 2012 at 01:50:51 PM
Reply: They did not make the film without my permission. Everything was legal. They bought film rights to my story. After that, I was out of the loop. The contract (like almost all movie contracts) gave them permission to hire their own script writer and produce a film they thought would make money at the box office. This movie did exactly that. For them. I received no portion of the box office receipts. (That, too, is the norm for film option purchases.)

I totally agree with your assessment of the film. I was horrified when I saw it. But I was not consulted or informed about what was going to be done to my story. I found out about that only when I bought my ticket (just like everybody else) and went into a movie theater to view it.

Down a Dark Hall

Question: Hi, I was curious. Is your story DOWN A DARK HALL about anything true whether it's a friend or something you experienced? Is it maybe an exaggeration of something that happened, or made-up? Also, have your ever considered writing poetry, inside or outside of your stories? If you happen to come across an idea about mystery, a riddling poem is always the way to go.

[From:Chris]

Asked on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 07:05:14 PM
Reply: DOWN A DARK HALL is pure fiction. Although there have been con artists who copied the work of old masters and chemically aged them and tried to pawn them off as originals.

I've always written poetry. One book of my poetry, SEASONS OF THE HEART, can be ordered on-line from Amazon.com. I wrote the poem in DOWN A DARK HALL that Sandy channelled from 'Ellis." Poems of mine appear in KILLING MR. GRIFFIN and in RANSOM. And most of my text in children's picture books is rhymed verse.

I Walk at Night

Question: I found your book in Cleveland Heights, Ohio at MAC Books. I read it and it made me teary-eyed because it is so in tune with the essence of cats. I wanted to compliment you on your sensitivity to cat nature. I have feral cats that know the warmth of home but also the adventure of outside. Thank you for providing the understanding for children. I rarely see any depictions of cats that are what I consider to be accurate.

Reply: Thank you for liking I WALK AT NIGHT! I'm not widely known as an author of picture book text, so it delights me when somebody discovers one and enjoys it.

I thought the artwork was extraordinary. If you look at it carefully, you will find tiny motifs -- stars, clovers, etc. -- subtly used in various way in picture after picture. I thought that was a stroke of genius on the part of the illustrators.

Question: Dear, Lois Duncan I love the book I know what you did last summer and now half of your books are on my to read list, it is my favorite book ever. I was wondering if there will ever be a seqeul to I know what you did last summer. I saw the movie it was awful compared to your masterpiece.

Asked on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 09:00:38 PM
Reply: Thank you for liking the book and for not liking the awful movie. No, I have no plans to write sequels to any of my young adult suspense novels. Once an adventure is over, it's over. I don't believe sequels ever measure up to the original stories, and I like to quit while I'm ahead.

Dear Lois,

Question: Did you ever feel limited in school, when you have a due date or a
"Recommended maximum to keep your peers' attention"?

-Anonymous, for safety concerns. I hope you understand.

Asked on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 05:45:58 PM
Reply: No. I'm an orderly person and when I was a student I liked to have due dates so I could schedule my time. Adult life is a series of due dates: rent's due, manuscript's due to be submitted, dinner's due to be served. Why should school be any different?

I don't know what you mean by "a recommended maximum to keep my peers' attention." That must be some kind of new teaching technique. When I went to school we weren't supposed to "hold our peers attention," we were supposed to concentrate on our school work.

Dear Lois Duncan,

Question: Hello Lois! I just have a couple questions for you. I hope you don't mind if I ask. When you were a kid, did you ever expect to write novels? I always read novels, and write what feels like a novel and lose the story at about five pages. How do you keep writing? Thank you for your time.

If you "lose the story after about five pages" you might want to make yourself an outline before you start writing. That will keep you on track.

Question

Question: Have you ever experienced ESP?

Asked on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 03:45:56 PM
Reply: There are many forms of ESP. I think we all have experienced it in one way or another even if we haven't recognized it as such. Sometimes we have a "hunch" about something that turns out to be true. Mothers often 'sense' that their child is hurt or in danger, even if that child isn't with her. Twins, in particular, sense things about each other, even when they are apart. My brothers-in-law were identical twins. When they were about ten, one went to summer camp and the other, for some reason, did not. The stay-at-home twin suddenly started screaming and clutching his arm; it turned out that, at exactly that same moment, the twin at camp had fallen and broken his arm.

So, yes, I have experienced ESP. But certainly not to the same degree as Nancy in A GIFT OF MAGIC or Karen in THE THIRD EYE.

Your books.

Question: I just wanted to pass a note on to you about your books. When I was younger I read your book A stranger with my face. It has always fascinated me and after all these years as my children were growing up I would tell them that story. I can across it at a book store and was so thrilled to have it again. I has forgotten the name but never the story. I have read it over and over, at a local store I came across some of our other books, A gift of Magic and I just finished that one. I am on to the next one Don't look behind you and I have 3 more on order. I just wanted to let you know for all these years that one book has always been in the back of my mind. Now I am beginning to branch out to your other books now that I have found you again. I am on a massive search for you non fiction book, "Who killed my daughter." It take some time, but I am sure I will be able to find it at some local bookstore. I just wanted to let you know what an impact you have had no my life. Not just the stories, but the way you have written them. Thank you so much.. Cindy Bredwell

WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER is not available in many book stores, because they want to fill their shelves with newly published books. It's available as an inexpensive paperback, and you can order it from on-line book stores like Amazon.com.

Question: Hi, I am reading your story Down a Dark Hall, and so far it's wonderful. Are there any facts or stories that you haven't told on the website? Quite a bit of kids chose you for their author project, so is there anything you can help me add to it that came straight from you? Thanks for your time and reading this.

Dear Lois Duncan,

Question: I finished reading your novel Summer of Fear. I absolutely loved the novel; it was such a page-turner. I love how you do suspense. For example, when Rachel was trying to find out what was wrong/ different with Julia, I was on the edge of my seat. I love that you made the maid pretend to be Julia, while the real Julia died. Also, I enjoy how you make the endings so surprising. I never know how they're going to end. For example, the ending of Summer of Fear when we found out Julia that lived with Rachel was actually Sarah the aunt and uncle's maid, blew me away. I love how you foreshadow events like when Rachel tells Julia about Professor Jervis knowing about her being a witch and you foreshadow that Professor Jervis is going to get hurt because he knows the truth. Also, the way you write is incredible. I mean the first book of yours I read was The Twisted Window which was two years ago. I've been hooked on your books ever since. I also love how you use sensory language in your writing. I could visualize every scene in your books.I am trying to get my family hooked. I am working on my grandmother right now. She is reading your novel Killing Mr. Griffin. I love all of your novels so far. I read I Know What You Did Last Summer, Killing Mr. Griffin, Stranger with My Face, Don't look Behind You, The Twisted Window, Ransom, and Summer of Fear. My favorite novel of yours so far is Killing Mr. Griffin because it had a surprising ending and I predicted who the killer was. I can't wait to read more of your books! Do you have a favorite novel?
[From: Beth M age 14]
P.S. You're my favorite author of all time!
