The nightmare of all mothers...

Question: Lois,

I can only imagine what it must have felt like when you're daughter was murdered. My own daughter, Tiffany, was killed in a car accident. And even though we've both lost the same things, you're loss was greater. You'll never know who killed your daughter maybe, and i do. You are in my heart always.

Yours, Hope

Question: Hi my name is Destiny Young and I am doing Lois Duncan for a book essay. It has to be about an author that I like and I picked her. I just found out about her daughter and I am so sad. I would hate to have anyone I know murdered or anyone for that matter. I feel very bad for Lois and I am sorry about her daughter.

Your daughter, Kait.

Question: I've read your story about Kait and it makes me sad to think that you'll never know who really killed her. The fact that her killer could be reading this site right now, makes me mad. He/ she should be behind bars and to think she was Lois Duncan's daughter... that makes her special. Lois and her family all have special charachteristics. What were hers?

Asked on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 07:02:41 AM
Reply: Just because Kait happened to be the daughter of an author doesn't make her death any more tragic than the murder of anyone else's daughter.

Even though it's been many years, I DO believe that we will find out who killed her. Because, loyalties change. The killer's ex-wife or ex-girlfriend may contact us. Or somebody the killer bragged to when he ws drunk. Or somebody who cared about Kait, and wanted to share information with us, but was afraid, may find the courage to come to us. If they do, we promise we'll do nothing that will place them in danger, and we will bless them forever.

Question: hey , i know how hard it must have been for you to write a book that is based on the murder of your daughter. my mom said that if i ever died she would kill herself but, i dont want her to do that if anything ever happened to me because who will be there for my three brothers and sisters. thats where i am proud of you. instead of hiding someplace and locking your feelings up after i dont know how many years you are still there for your other children and your still looking for the killer of your daughter. i am only years old and i am learning from you and your books about mistakes that i can fix if these events ever took place. i just want to thank you for letting me and other young adults feel what you have felt with your books and making us think about the choices that we make within our life!
u r my idol

Brandon

Asked on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at 12:19:41 PM
Reply: No, we don't have any contact with Dung and have no idea what he's doing now. After my book came out, he moved to the Pacific Northwest. Then, when the dust settled, he returned, bringing with him a new girlfriend named Lisa Prulhiere, who people tell us looks very much like Kait. They had a child. I don't know if they married or are still together.

Reply: The information in the "Possible motives -- drug smuggling" section is brand new. The "Possible attempts to intimidate witnesses" section is new. And additional information has been added to many of the other sections.

Reply: I'm glad you like my suspense novels, but, to answer your question -- no, Kait's murder did not inspire me to write mysteries. All the books you mention were written prior to her murder. After her death, I wrote one more suspense novel -- Gallows Hill -- because I was obligated to fulfill a contract I'd signed before her death. Then, I stopped writing in that genre'. I find it impossible to invest myself in creating a fictional suspense story about a young woman in a life threatening situation when our own true-life mystery still lacks an ending.

Im Sorry about your daughter

Question: Hi im 12 and i am reading your book "who killed my daughter". Its very upsetting that someone would kill a person like Kait. I just had a few questions. If Dung knew who killed Kait and what happened doesnt he have to tell the police, isnt it against the law if he doesnt. I mean he told you he knew but he didnt tell you who. If he knew that means he deffantily had something to do with it. So couldnt you go to court or something, because he has to tell the truth to the juge. Also could it be possible if the Vietnamese group to hire the cops to kill Kait, because you said that the killer had to be one of the cops. If the Vietnamese group were trying to warn her then wouldnt Dung have told you that, instead it looked like he was trying to protect the person who did it as to he took part in the killing too. Im so sorry about your Daughter i dont know why anyone would take life from such a sweet girl like her.
Sincerely-
Lauren M.

Reply: The only answer to your good questions, Lauren, is that The System doesn't work the way most of us were raised to believe it does. Dung doesn't HAVE to tell anybody anything. Nobody can force him to tell the truth. And the people who have information can't be forced to reveal it. Some of them are scared. Others simply don't want to "get involved." There is an occasional good and courageous person who DOES contact us with important information, and that's what keeps us going.

We don't know that the killer was a cop. That was the opinion of a police officer who reviewed the crime scene photos, but he could be wrong. This is a case in which there are TWO MANY possible motives and TOO MANY possible suspects.
