Question: The message with the subject "The Timeline Post" was fantastic.

My worst grief -- beyond the incredible personal loss of my beloved little sister -- was that she died for nothing. An empty death. Your post gives me hope that her life and death did have meaning. Thank you.

The Timeline post
Question: I read "Who Killed My Daughter" when it first came out, and have followed your case and posted here occasionally just to show my support for your quest to learn the truth. Your response to the timeline post jumps off the page in light of how the book unfolded. When you started, you pretty much knew nothing but the fact that Kait was shot, apparently as she was driving. And "what happened" was so obscured that you learned key information through dreams and psychics. But over the years, Kait's death and your attempts to learn what happened to her uncovered a whole world of corruption, far beyond even the complex Vietnamese gang activities that in the beginning were so unexpected and shocking.

The irony is that whoever killed Kait do so to cover up this whole nest of crimes and criminals but has only succeeded in creating a situation in which more and more inevitably comes to light. And while you may not know exactly what happened, who exactly pulled the trigger or who exactly ordered it, you know she was killed because they feared her. However short her life was, she had and continues to have a powerful impact, even beyond the criminal enterprise she has exposed through her death. And she will continue to inspire other parents and siblings and spouses and children to ask questions about the deaths of their loved ones.

I know you are going to learn the truth. It's like you are untangling a ball of yarn but you won't be finished until you reach the end. There's just more corruption than you or anyone else would have imagined.

Question: I've been turning this case over in my head for several days now. I'm pretty sure someone mentioned making a timeline somewhere on the message boards- the timeline I am interested in revolves around Dung. Didn't he know Kait worked at Pier One before they started dating? There are so, so many pieces to this puzzle, but I'm starting to think they are all involved- that is, EVERY suspect and EVERY motive are entwined. So, maybe a timeline from years back, of Kait started the job this day, then met Dung, then found out about the insurance fraud.. I guess what I mean is, Dung was told to befriend someone at pier one to eventually intercept drugs. I also wonder if Kait wasn't killed because of something she knew, but as a warning to Dung (or someone else?).
I feel bad posting here; I don't have any information, and I probably can't come up with any theories that you and your family and PIs haven't all ready thought about. I hope I am not being pushy by spitting out half-cocked ideas. I wish I could be of use.
Just wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts.

Reply: We’ve constructed the time line, and it’s interesting for many reasons which I won’t go into here. Thank you for suggesting that we do that. It was a very useful exercise.

However, your suggestion that Dung may have become involved with Kait because she worked at Pier One doesn’t pan out. They started dating in February 1988, and Kait was hired at Pier One in June 1988. She got that job through a girlfriend who also worked there. So that appears to be happenstance.

However, we’ve discovered through private investigation that Dung’s group was involved in many areas of crime and apparently took advantage of every opportunity they could latch onto. The activities that we know about (and there probably are others) include: car wreck insurance fraud; drug dealing; importation of porn from the Orient, which they allegedly sold to a video store that was owned by the father of a police officer; theft of computer chips from companies like Intel and Phillips Semi-Conductors; arson; and car theft – (we’ve been told by an attorney that members of Dung’s group stole getaway cars for APD Officer Matt Griffin, who was arrested one week prior to Kait’s murder and subsequently convicted of bank robberies and murder.) Griffin was one of the cops who hung out at the auto body shop on Arno where the VW bug fled after leaving the scene of Kait’s murder.

Although Dung didn’t start to date Kait because she worked at Pier One, it makes sense that his friends later got the idea of using her position there as a way of importing heroin. Apparently she refused to be involved in that.

I totally agree with your statement, “There are so many pieces to this puzzle, I’m starting to think they are all involved – that is EVERY suspect and EVERY motive are intertwined.” We have a link chart that connects almost everyone and everything that is mentioned on this Web site. The new information, recently posted by the wife of a retired police officer, that Officer Wallace (first officer dispatched to Kait’s scene) hung out at that body shop, and her boyfriend, Alex Marentas, (later head of the Police Union), was a field officer at the scene, involved in collecting evidence, provides an additional link.

So, on and on it goes. Can any of you, out there in Cyberspace, inject another piece into this horrific jigsaw puzzle?

And i hope you find the person who killed your daughter. my question is are you in contact with Daug or no? And if you are are you both still freinds?
Im sorry for your lost again and in time i beleive that God will show who did this to your daughter.
God bless you.

Question: It still hurts my heart that you all have to wish Kait a happy birthday without her here and with her killer (s) out there without paying for their crimes. Maybe they have paid with their lives. Many people die without us knowing about it & karma has a way of showing her ugly face. I come to this site several times a year with hopes you have new information & the Tally Keeper will finally be released with all the information leading up to how you found the killers. I pray your family will find this. Kait deserves this. Please, if you are out there - come forward and give this family what they need. They will keep you in their hearts forever for it.

Forever praying for you. JB

Reply: Thank you for watching over us for so long.

This may come as a shock to those of you who keep up with this case, but I don't want Kait's killers to be dead. I don't want revenge. That will come in good time to all who were involved in the murder and the cover-up. God takes care of that. What we -- Kait's family (not just me, but her father and brothers and sisters who loved her so much) --need to put our hearts to rest is to know and expose the truth about what really happened to her.

Speaking for myself only -- not for certain members of our family who don't agree with me on this issue -- I personally don't believe in capital punishment.

Question: Hello Ms. Duncan.
I've been a big fan of your books for many years. My boss is on vacation this week, and I was reading stuff on wikipedia, which led me here.
I'm appalled. Seriously, there is no one in this country that can make the officers who swore to uphold the law at least consider the evidence you have uncovered? Couldn't the governor order an investigation, or allow the FBI in? If there is anyone I can write a letter to, I would be more than willing. I wish there was more I could offer to do.
I am curious about the autopsy report. Shouldn't that be made available to you if you ask? Couldn't you see who the medical examiner was, and ask about the bullets? There are so many glaring holes in this investigation, but this one seems easy to track down, and obvious to anyone as a mistake.
I need to catch up on posts, and buy the book- how did Kait meet Sharon, the new friend?
I find the fact that no one stayed with her until the ambulance came.. well.. appalling. Again. The feeling I get about that is a crooked cop said "leave, because you don't want to see what I'm going to do" (be that pick up bullets/glass/wipe fingerprints). I can't believe anyone can exist with this on their conscience.
I'm sorry for your loss.

Reply: In the many years since Kait's death, we have approached everybody we could think of for assistance in getting Kait's case thoroughly and honestly investigated. Either we receive no response, or we're told that any concerns we have should be taken to APD.

DA Bob Schwartz told us that he had no authority to force the police to investigate cases in which they've lost interest because he worked for the county and APD worked for the city. Attorney General Tom Udall made an appointment with us and then stood us up. The FBI said they couldn’t become involved because murder’s not a federal crime. US Attorney, John Kelly, declined to meet with us. The INS would not respond to our certified letters. Gov. Gary Johnson did not wish to become involved and forwarded our letter to the Department of Public Safety. DPS Secretary Darren White, (a former sergeant at APD), said the DPS will not review another agency’s murder case. The American Civil Liberties Union said they could not become involved, because it was Kait’s civil rights that were violated, not ours, and Kait can’t file a suit because she’s dead.

I could go on and on, but suffice to say, we’ve knocked on every possible door. “The System” does not work the way the public thinks it does.

The only person willing to become involved was the late Steve Schiff, United States Congressman from New Mexico. Congressman Schiff wrote a letter to Attorney General Janet Reno, requesting that the Justice Department look into a possible police cover-up. The assistant attorney general of the Civil Rights Division responded that the federal five-year statute of limitations prohibited their doing that.

We do have a copy of the autopsy report and have many questions about it. Our P.I. met with Dr. Patricia McFeeley, Office of the Medical Investigator, who found our questions valid. She said the OMI would be willing to conduct a reinvestigation of Kait's death, assisted by scene photos, scene reports and other physical evidence to which the OMI did not have access when performing the autopsy, but they had to have the assistance and approval of APD. APD would not grant that assistance and approval.

Question: Its exciting to see that Rod's visiting this site and posting on the message board. All of a sudden he's real to me and not just a character in a book that read almost like fiction.

Rod, would you be willing to tell us about your friendship with Kait? Was she really going to break up with Dung?

Asked on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 08:11:37 AM

We don't know where Dung is now, but we have no reason to believe he's ever been arrested for anything.

Most of the police involved in this case are still alive, although some have retired from APD.

I just wanted to say that I am so sorry for your loss. I am the mother of two and couldn't fathom the pain you and your family have gone through. I have not yet read your story, however, I'm going out tomorrow to buy the book. I hope your prayers are answered and peace comes your way.

Question: I went onto the other website that you have on this case. I dont understand how you can have all these tips and information on something and nobody (police wise) wont check up on it. Do you still stay somewhere in new mexico and are things still that bad down there like police covering things up and the police are the ones doing the crimes? Have you only had the new mexico police and judges only look at this case or have you had somebody with the law look at in the united states and see what they think am sure you did since we all know the police are trying to hide something. I know this might be stupid question but this actually is kate mother am writing and she is the one writing back, right? The case is still open or have they closed it completely. I hope not because somebody needs to be punished for this crime. This type of stuff makes me wanna get into the law force so i can find out who really did this and so they can be punised for the foolish ignorant crime they committed.

Asked on Monday, September 17, 2007 at 02:20:36 PM
Reply: Yes, this really is Kait's mother responding to posts. The case is technically open, since nobody has been convicted. However, the police consider it "closed" and refuse to do further investigation.

APD "owns" Kait's case. No other agency has the authority to investigate it.

Happy Birthday, Kait
Question: Wishing Kait an early Happy Birthday. I believe that everyone who reads her story is visited by a bit of her spirit. I know I am.

Asked on Monday, September 17, 2007 at 10:10:15 AM
Reply: Yes, Tuesday, September 18, is Kait's birthday. If things had gone as she planned, by now she would be a doctor, possibly a pediatrician, because she loved children. She would be married (happily, of course) and she and her husband would have four children and live in Corrales and have dogs and horses.

Tonight every member of our family, wherever we all are, will light a candle to bring light to her spirit and sing "Happy Birthday." She still is one of us.

Asked on Sunday, September 16, 2007 at 03:27:10 PM
Reply: Thank you for your sympathy. No, we don't know the identity of the triggermen.

I say "triggerMEN," plural, because evidence indicates that two people fired shots. One large caliber bullet went into the car doorframe, and two small caliber bullets went into Kait's head.

Eric Garcia
Question: Was Eric Garcia one of the cops who hung out at that car repair shop on Arno where the VW went after leaving Kate's scene? What's the address of that car shop?

Asked on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 03:30:52 PM
Reply: The body shop was A&A Unlimited aka Rocky Mountain Radiator.

It was located at 824 Arno NE. Owners were Frank Arellano (now deceased) and his wife Shirley Arellano and their son, Michael.
The bookkeeper was Stephanie Francisco.

A year or so ago the business was sold and burned to the ground.
