who killed my daughter

Question: It took me 2 days to read "Who Killed My Daughter" I went on line to see how it all eneded up. I was horrified to see that justice had not yet been carried out and this nightmare is still on going. I am so very sorry. Have you tried to enlist the help of the new grads from either the FBI or the police force they may be more eager and willing to get invoved and make a name for themseleves. Is Kaitlyn still trying to direct you? I know you'll get em someway.

Asked on Thursday, February 08, 2007 at 05:49:43 PM
Reply: The "new grads" at police departments work only on cases to which they are assigned by their superiors. And the FBI does not investigate murder, because murder is not a federal crime.

Question: Anything in your data base on APD officer Steve Nakamura?

Asked on Wednesday, February 07, 2007 at 02:15:02 PM
Reply: According to Steve Gallegos, the lead detective in Kait's case, Officer Nakamura was linked to the auto body shop at 824 Arno, which was why APD didn't question the owner of that shop.

However, Nakamura has also been described to us as the "honest cop," who witnessed the shooting of Peter Klunck in alleged "self-defense" by APD Officers Matt Griffin, Robert Valtierra and Paul Heatley, and told his sergeant that Peter was unarmed. (You can read about the Peter Klunck shooting on the Real Crimes web site at www/realcrimes.com. It occurred exactly 6 months before Kait was murdered.) Nakamura's statement apparently got him into trouble with APD, so it's not impossible that he was made a scapgoat in Kait's case and was not linked to the body shop group at all.

one cop who hung out at that auto body shop

Question: I know for a fact that Frank Arellano, owner of that shop at 824 Arno, stated in a depostion that Todd Babcock, an APD officer, used to fix his car at that shop at night. Babcock also baby sat for Shirley Arellano, Frank's wife or ex-wife or whatever she was back then. So that's one name for your list if you don't already have it.

Question: which cops are known to have hung out at the shop?

Asked on Saturday, February 03, 2007 at 08:06:12 PM
Reply: Various people (some of them women who were solicited to attend after-hours party at the shop on Arno) have contributed names to our list, but since they haven't been varified, I don't feel it's appropriate to post them on a public message board. The exception is "Matt Griffin," because his name came from the shop owner's girlfriend, who also worked as his bookkeeper. She would seem to be a reliable source.

Officer Wallace

Question: To the person who posted the message headed "shots",

Its interesting you zero in on officer Mary ann Wallace as the shooter and suggest a link between her and the cops at the chop shop. I know she hung out in that area and was a friend of the APD narc who was the brother of Paul Apodaca's drug dealer.

Maybe there are enough of us who have one little piece of this puzzle so we can combine them and make a whole picture come together.

Question: do you guys have an advice colum for peole who have cases like this??????????

Asked on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 01:37:09 PM
Reply: No. We're seeking advice, not trying to advise others. We're not in a position to do that.

However, if you have a case that was not thoroughly and/or honestly investigated by law enforcement, you might want to contact the Real Crimes web site at www.realcrimes.com and see if they think it's appropriate to post on that site. That site was created to keep the facts of such cases from becoming buried, and it's become a valued resource for investigative reporters and TV shows.

indictments

Question: i havent heard anything about the alledged courthouse indictments which some say was supposed to become public this month. its the end of the month and no word. however, iglesius, the federal prosecutor is gone or is leaving. vigil got a 3year sentence, i believe. the gov has announced his run for presidency. maybe a deal was struck? other than that, it seems like business as usual... anyone have insight into the status of the unsealing of indictments?

shots

Question: ive always had two theories. One that Wallace pulled her over at John Street and shot the .38 at her which she for some reason got away from, and then chased her to the cutoff point where apodaca and dung sat. Unless she knew Wallace from the body shop, she would have no reason to fear a cop, especialy a woman. Two that the .38 was just shot into the car to give the impression of a wild drive by when if fact it was a very controlled hit.

Asked on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 04:51:42 AM
Reply: You raise some interesting possibilities. Why do you think it may have been Wallace rather than some other cop? (If you would prefer to answer that privately, send us an e-mail.)

Question: i don't realy have a question but i just wanted to leave a message... right now i am reading your book who killed my daughter... by far it is one of the best books you have ever written... i am sorry for your loss and i think that the APD did a horrible job in trying to solve your daughters case... so far in the book, you are doing a better job in finding the killer than the APD ever did.. i hope that someday the case will be solved and that you and your family will not live in agony.

Question: Hmmmm
Well, I have been following this case since 1992 and on the net since 98. A theory I had once upon a time was that Kait may have been chased on the way to Sharons and that may explain the misplaced bullet and could explain why she was so upset (and probably realized that Sharon was a phony).

Years later, as I see more posts, it is my theory (not that I am Columbo or anything) that Kait was not as "naive" as everyone thought. The fact that someone opened a huge supply of drugs at Pier One opens the possibility that poor Kait got the blame for something she didnt do. I know she had to have known about some stuff, but I dont think she would be balsy enough to make threats to expose. She probably wanted to just "move on",but it was far too late. I am sorry if I sound mean, but I give Kait alot more credit than wat some think.

The crime scene is interesting. Even in 92, I didnt think it wa drive by. She was rammed and was alive when that car was parked. The shoes, the car, all points to that ! Poor Baby. What a loss. Please dont lose the hope!God,

Asked on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at 12:09:50 AM
Reply: Those are interesting observations. We know Kait must have been chased twice that night. A truck driver reported seeing her chased as she drove west on Lomas around 9:30 p.m., which would have been en route to Sharon's. Then she was shot in the head at about 10:45, driving east toward our house, after leaving Sharon's. We've been taking it forgranted that all the shots -- two in her head and one in the car door frame -- were fired on that second occasion. But your suggestion that the shot in the door frame, which appears to have been from a different caliber weapon, was fired on the first occasion is certainly not impossible.

As far as Kait's being naive -- she definitely knew about the car wreck scam, probably since Sept. 1988, when Dung went out to California with An Le and staged the first wreck we have on record for him.

She was much less likely to have known about the drug importation until right at the end. During the almost two years she dated Dung, she lived at home and had a curfew, which she always kept. In fact, most evenings, Dung would eat dinner at our house and they would hang out together in the family room watching TV, and then he'd leave and Kait would go to bed. She THOUGHT he left to go home. It wasn't until she got her own apartment and Dung moved in with her that she realized that his time with her in the early evening was a prelude to his going out all night with his friends.

I believe that's when she became aware that other types of criminal activity were going on. That's when she went into a depression, was crying all the time, and started seeing Rod (the secret second boyfriend). The timing of the discovery of the heroin -- (the amount that her co-worker found was not a huge supply, it was more like a sample to demonstrate the quality of the product)-- the co-worker's reporting her find to the FBI, the manager being fired for no valid reason, and then Kait's murder, all taking place within a matter of weeks seems too much to be coincidental. Our speculation is that she was ordered to intercept drugs from the Orient, shipped by UPS through Pier One, and refused to do so. Whether or not she had the nerve to go to the authorities, she would have been seen as a threat if she knew about that operation and would not participate.

Besides, by then she had passed the point of protecting Dung to prevent him from being deported. She was no longer besotted with love for him. She had given Dung his walking papers and made arrangements for a girlfriend to move in with her. She apparently had fallen for Rod. That made her even more of a threat.

Reply: I realize your question was well-intentioned and thank you for asking it.

You make a good point. Why not post every single bit of information we stumble onto, no matter how insignificant, just in case something that didn't seem important at the time DOES turn out to be important?

We've considered doing that, for that very reason. But we've decided not to. Innocent people might be hurt. Besides, some information we receive from "tipsters" isn't true. It's been deliberately "planted" to misdirect us and could throw off the entire investigation.

Our decision was not to post any information on Kait's web site until our private investigators (more than one) determine that it's accurate.
