Your book missing from all libraries in ABQ

Question: Dear Mrs. Arquette,
You were one of my favorite writers growing up, and I was so saddened to hear about the death of your daughter. I read your book shortly after it came out, and shortly thereafter relocated to Albuquerque. I was curious to re-read the book for some of the specific details as I was now familiar with the area. I was working in a library at the time, and I attempted to check the book out. Would you believe that EVERY single copy was missing from every single library in the ABQ metro area? They were all listed as either \"lost\" or \"damaged beyond repair.\" A chill went up my spine upon reading this-we\'re talking about 15-20 copies here. A coincidence? I am sure it isn\'t and someone out there doesn\'t want anyone with information stumbling across it accidentally. I imagine that your daughter\'s friend, Sharon, would be risking her own life to tell you the truth about what she knows, and I am a little worried for your safety as well. ABQ can be a scary place to live even without having such dangerous people angry at you. For your family\'s safety, I hope that you are no longer living in the area, and that the truth will come out someday. I look forward to reading \"The Tally Keeper.\" Best wishes, and thank you for many hours of enjoyment spent reading your wonderful books. Christine

Reply: THIS IS JUST INCREDIBLE!!!!!!

At this late date, is there any record still available of who checked out those "lost" or "destroyed" books?

Any new books out lately?

Question: After reading your response to the english teacher I have to ask you if you have any new books out for younger readers. I'm a grandmother and am looking for Christmas presents for children ages 2, 4, 10 and 16.

Reply: For the 2-yr-old: SONGS FROM DREAMLAND -- original lullabies, book and CD. I wrote the lyrics and my musician daughter Robin composed the music and performed the vocals and instrumentals. You can listen to excerpts from the songs and, if you like them, order it from Robin's Web site at www.lullabysongs.net.

I'm afraid I don't have anything in print for 4-yr-olds, unless you can find I WALK AT NIGHT on Amazon.com.

For the 10-yr-old -- NEWS FOR DOGS, (the sequel to my novel HOTEL FOR DOGS) -- has just been published. It should be in physical bookstores and also on Amazon.

All that's approprite for teenagers are my young adult suspense novels, which are now available only as paperbacks, either in bookstores or on Amazon. The hard covers editions are out of print.

And, of course, WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? for older teens and for adults.

The landlord?

Question: I am an English teacher in Oklahoma. I just finished your book, Who Killed My Daughter, and am going to suggest it to all of my students. It only took me a couple of afternoons to finish it because I was so intrigued and inspired by your constant desire to find your daughter's murderer. I still wonder why no one other than you and your husband talked to the landlord of Kait's apartment? Later in the book we find out that the Vietnamese gang was out in front of the apartment changing the color of a VW bug from tan to black? What? That alone tells me something is up - red flag, red flag! I think, the principals at my high school could have figured out your case and held everyone involved accountable within a couple of weeks. Why hasn't anyone else? I would think the police would want to take the opportunity to figure out the unanswered questions to make themselves look better.
I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are so brave!

With admiration and encouragement,
Shari in Oklahoma - a new fan!

Asked on Monday, November 02, 2009 at 01:05:12 PM
Reply: You're absolutely right, Shari. The newspapers were blasting the fact that "police are searching for a beige VW bug that witnesses saw fleeing the crime scene," and people at Kait's apartment complex informed police that Dung and his friends were out in the parking lot, spray painting a beige VW bug black the day after Kait died, and no one ever followed up on that?!!!!

On a pleasanter subject, since you're an English teacher, you might want to visit my "Lois Duncan" Web site at www.loisduncan.arquettes.com, which is the site I created for students who read my books. It's totally different from this one and has a message board where kids can ask question about my young adult suspense novels and I respond. And, of course, there are plenty of questions about HOTEL FOR DOGS.

Summer of 1994

Question: Dear Arquette Family,

Years ago, I believe in the summer of 1994, I read the book, Who Killed My Daughter. I was so moved by Kaitlyn's story, I wrote a letter to Lois and much to my surprise, she wrote me back. I was only fourteen years old then and the experience of reading that book and sharing in your family's pain has remained with me for over fifteen years now.

I still think of you often and am reminded of Kaitlyn's story every time I hear a current event regarding insurance fraud. My thoughts and prayers have been and always will be with you.

Sincerely,
Nicole Novotny
Cheyenne, Wyoming

Asked on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 01:09:42 PM
Reply: Thank you, Nicole. As you'll see by clicking on the various links on Kait's Web site, our family's personal investigation since my book was published in 1992 has taken the case far beyond the crime of insurance fraud.

Anything New?

Question: I was just wondering if since the book has been published and so much light has been shed on the corruption of the APD, has Kaitlyn's case gotten the attention of any higher police officials that are willing to investigate the things that the police flat out ignored so many years ago? Such as the phone numbers of the calls placed just minutes after Kait was pronounced dead? Also have the police now accepted any of the input from the psychic readings? I know things were different back then they are now but I have heard of psychics such as Sylvia Brown actually helping detectives. I really do pray that one day in this life you will have answers...I can't imagine your pain and frustration for the last 20 years. But I do believe that when you are reunited with your beautiful daughter that she'll be able to tell you every detail you've ever ached to know. Stay strong.
All my love and hope,
Tiffany

P.S. Please keep the novels coming, mysteries are my fave and you're the best! ;)

Reply: The only agencies in a position to remove the case from the control of APD are the FEDS. That's where our hopes lie.

With the help of an investigative reporter and an insurance claims investigator in California, we do know the identities of the people who were called from Kait's supposedly unoccupied apartment as soon as she died. Those calls were made to the people in California who set up the fake car wrecks.

We have never to this day approached APD with information from psychics. Since they refused to accept statements from qualified informants with verifiable information, we knew we would only succeed in making ourselves less credible if we brought in the paranormal.

Yes, there are psychics who openly and allegedly successfully work with police departments and with the FBI, including some that we consulted. But we haven't consulted Sylvia Browne and don't intend to.

Question: Was the person who made that statement Alex Marentas, Officer Wallace's boyfriend at the time Kait was murdered?

Asked on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 03:33:14 PM
Reply: Yes, the person who made that statement was Alex Marentas. He allegedly was a field officer at Kait's scene. Several people have posted on this message board or told us by private e-mail that he was Officer Mary Ann Wallace's boyfriend at the time of the murder, but we have no way to verify that.

Mayor Berry

Question: Contact him. Convince him to get interested in this case.

Asked on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 08:50:57 PM
Reply: The last thing a new mayor wants is to (1) become involved in a controversial mess that his predecessors have abandoned and/or (2) turn the police union against him.

When mayor Jim Baca attempted to establish a citizen review board for police-misconduct cases, the president of the union told the media, "If he screws with us, we will do everything possible to defeat him in the next election." Which they did.

The mayor has no control over APD. It's the other way around.

Asked on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 07:23:03 PM
Reply: I didn't have to "build up courage" to write WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?. Writing that book GAVE me courage, because being able to keep the facts of Kait's case from becoming buried made me feel less impotent.

My sister's dad, Steven, left us too, for some "Italian" babe, Mandi .But, Lois, I have gone something like you, like I metnioned, we thought Mychel did the killing of my beloved Max, but he was found innocent... I just wanted to know if I could somehow. Contact me somehow! I will keep chcking your website! I am also in the 7th grade, and 12. Kait's boyfriend...

Question: Mrs. Ducan, I am 12, and currently a huge fan of you books! I also have read Agatha Christie's books, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boy, and a little of Sherlock Holmes. You mentioned Kait's boyfriend... Dung...something? Did you question him? I am sorry to say this, but my boyfriend died last year on Halloween. I was questioned, and I was only eleven! Max Jaimison was hit by a drunk-n-driver, and died in my arms. They first questioned his older sister's ex-boyfriend, Mychel because I was "sexy" to him, he was fifteen! Yeah, right, come on. Well, he did it! I just want to know, will you question him? I feel terribly sorry for your loss of Kait. I'm the middle of five... Laura, Courtney, Jessica (me), Mary D., and Rebecca (Becca) or (Ribbit). I was almost killed once, I know how it feels to see your life flash before your eyes. Just like in the "Third Eye", drowning is a horrible way to die, I was given CPR to save me. I ust want you to know, Kait is still here, I can feel her, she is trying to tell you who killed her. I'm so sorry!
Luv lots,
Knowing Jessie

Asked on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 07:43:27 AM
Reply: What a terrible story! I'm so sorry.

I am not legally allowed to "question" Dung on my own. That would be considered harassment and he could have me arrested. Only law enforcement is allowed to question him.

Tally Keeper

Question: Many years ago I read "Who Killed My Daughter," and in my last year of middle school did a book report on it. You were kind enough to let my interview you for the book report I did. I've been waiting for the update, "The Tallykeeper," and was wondering how the book is coming along? Do you have any more information?

I'm not a sophomore in college, and am a Resident Assistant for the University. I recommend your book to all of my residents; it's important that they know the dangers that lurk behind them. After all, the majority of them are only 17 and 18 as well.

I am also a Criminal Justice major as well, inspired greatly in part to yours and your family's story.

You and your family are in my prayers and thoughts,

Kayla

Asked on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 07:13:35 PM
Reply: Thank you for introducing your residents to Kait's story, Kayla. As you can see by the information on this Web site, we know a lot more today than we did when WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? was published. When THE TALLY KEEPER is published I will certainly announce that on this Web site.

Kaitlyn and Sharon

Question: I have just started reading your book. I decided to look up lon the internet to see if you had found who murdered Kaitlyn. When I came across your website I read through it. Something really stuck out to me. Have you been able to find out why Sharon changed her story about what time Kaitlyn arrived at her house? Also since she has not given you permission to see why she was really in the hospital the night of Kaitlyn's funeral, has she finally told you or anyone what happened to her?

Thanks and best of luck,
Nikki

Asked on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 06:16:51 PM
Reply: I don't know why Sharon changed her story. I can only assume that something took place in the three missing hours of Kait's final evening that Sharon belatedly decided must not be known about.

She has stuck to her story that she was in the hospital at the time of Kait's funeral because her dog bit her.

Question: I was so happy to hear back from you. What is the significance of the British version of \"Don\'t Look Behide you\" and the composite sketch if the suspect drawn by the psychic Noreen Reiner? This gave me chills! Also, what about DNA evidence?
-Bridgette

Asked on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 07:56:05 AM
Reply: Noreen Renier believes Kait psychically sent her the vision of that face -- which she then described to a police artist who drew the sketch -- as a way of sending us the message, "I was NOT killed in a random shooting. I was killed by a drug dealer's hitman, like the one in Mother's book."

Neither Noreen nor the police artist could have seen the picture of the hitman, as it wasn't on the jacket of the U.S. edition of DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU. It was on the jacket of the British edition. I received a proof of the British artwork shortly before Kait died and showed it to her. She and I were among the very few people in the United States who saw it. That edition was not available in the U.S.

The police didn't even take fingerprints. They certainly didn't bother with DNA evidence.

I wish they had fingerprinted Kait's purse, as I later discovered that somebody cleaned out her wallet. There wasn't a penny in it.

i loved your book

Question: Dear Lois,

I have been reading your book lately for a school project I am in 7th grade and i was wondering after you thought the police weren't doing enough to find out who killed Kaitlyn were you scared to find out things on your own? Also, are you still looking for Kaitlyn today. I honestly hope that you do find out who killed Kaitlyn.
Best of luck,
Morgan
age: 12

P.S
I loved your book it was the BEST book i have ever read and every night i pray that you find the killer and bring them to justice.

Asked on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 02:00:45 PM
Reply: I wasn't afraid to find out things on my own. I was furious and frustrated because there was no one in authority who was willing to accept and follow up on new information. If it wasn't a "random drive-by shooting" they didn't want to look at it.

Question: I just got done reading your book for a book report and i usually don\'t finish a book. I was very toughed and interested in your book. Every time i seen that the psychic reading matched what had happen my heart dropped it was crazy. I was just wondering to this day is it still unsolved. If so have you found out anything new since you published the book.
(From Bridgette)

Asked on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 01:59:57 PM
Reply: We've found out a lot of new things since the book was published. Among those: (1) The first officer at the scene delayed rescue by calling in a report of an accident with no injuries; (2) Kait was alone at the scene when the ambulance arrived, the cops had gone off and left her; (3) A man with a long record of violent attacks on women was at the scene when the cops arrived and was allowed to leave without being questioned; (4) Heroin was being smuggled into the country in packages shipped from the Orient through the Pier One Imports store where Kait worked.

So, yes, we have new information. The challenge comes with figuring out how it all fits together.
