Book Translation

Question: Was your book about Kait ever translated into Spanish or Vietnamese?

Asked on Thursday, September 02, 2010 at 08:36:16 PM
Reply: WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? was published in : Germany, Norway, Denmark, Poland, and Sweden. I have no control over which foreign publishers acquire the rights to it. Even if it was published in spanish or Vietnamese, it would not be distributed in those languages in the USA. It would be sold in book stores in those countries.

The case had a lot of TV coverage in Albuquerque. I'm sure everyone with any interest in it kept well informed.

Unsolved Mysteries

Question: Nobody could watch those two segments of the show and believe it wasn't a police cover-up. They say the Hispanic guys they arrested and released were chasing Kait's car one hour before she was shot. How could that be unless they were stalking her all evening? And you finding those phone numbers and the obvious difference in the handwriting, how could police shrug those off? This is crazy.

Asked on Thursday, September 02, 2010 at 04:38:31 AM
Reply: It's not "crazy." It's a conspiracy. And good cops are being forced to comply with it.

Dec. Gallegos did not WANT to appear on "Unsolved Mysteries" to stumble around trying to respond to those questions -- he was there because the APD captain and DA Bob Schwartz, who were supposed to be the spokespeople, suddenly became "too busy" for a ten minute interview, and poor Steve Gallegos (who I believe is a basically good man who simply obeyed orders) was made the scape goat.

A couple of years later, when Dec. Gallegos was AGAIN put in this position with the Nathan Romero case (go to http://www.realcrimes.com and scroll down to that one), he quit the homicide dept.

Question: How much closer are we to seeing the publication?

Asked on Friday, August 27, 2010 at 01:27:14 PM
Reply: With the event of electronic publishing, the world of publishing is rapidly changing. My agent is looking into an assortment of options that were not available to me when WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? was published. When we decide what we want to do, I will post that information.

Asked on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 01:16:39 PM
Reply: Thank you, Brianna. I'm glad you enjoy my suspense novels, and, yes, a number of those are laid in New Mexico, because that's where I lived when I wrote them. They are now coming out in new, up-dated editions for today's sophisticated young adult readers. I've given my "old fashioned" characters computers and cell phones.

Question: Dear Ms. Duncan,

Your books "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "A Gift of Magic" were childhood favorites of mine; I read them over and over. I was thoroughly disgusted with what Hollywood did to "I Know What You Did Last Summer". When I learned of the criminal corruption and ineptness of your daughter's murder investigation, I was appalled. I hope so much that you will find your daughter's killer and that justice will prevail on this earthly plane, as well as in the next world.

Wishing you all the best,

Amy

Reply: I agree, that movie was dreadful. I had no idea they were going to turn my suspense novel into a slasher film, complete with an insane fisherman (who wasn't in my book) decapitating my characters with an ice hook. Not only that, but the parents of the victims never shed a tear. I can't bear sensationalized violence for the same of entertainment -- especially now that I've experienced the real thing.

Thank you for your kind wishes for us.

Question: Dear Mr.&Mrs. Arquette, I hope who ever was the lowlife, son of a b**ch who did this will suffer one way an other. I know it won\'t bring Kait back, but for taking her life, he/she should lose their life as well.

Asked on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 12:29:46 AM
Reply: From what we've discovered, there were more than ONE "he/she" involved in this situation. It was a conspiracy, and when one member of it decides to come clean (or is exposed to us by an ex-lover, former friend, or someone who overheard information at a bar or at a drug party), we'll know the identities of the others and the parts they played in either the shooting or the cover-up.

Question: FROM KAIT'S MOTHER:

Ann Rule, my dear friend and the nation's most highly respected true crime writer, has written a book, IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT, (due out in Oct.), about the suspicious death of Ronda Reynolds, whose case is posted, at Ann's request, on our Real Crimes site at www.realcrimes.com.

To those concerned about the danger writing that book may place her in, this is my response:

"I trust Ann's instincts. I think she is following "her path." Ronda's mother never would have maintained the energy to uncover the truth without the emotional support she derived from Ann's efforts and belief in her cause.

The safest thing one can do in a situation involving crime is SPEAK OUT. Otherwise, you're a threat. Once you've talked, there's no reason to kill you, because you've already done your damage. To harm you then would confirm your accusations. That's why Kait was killed. To prevent her from speaking out. If she'd done that immediately, she would have been safe.

In my eyes Ann Rule is a heroine in every sense of the word.

Question: I was wondering if your book The Talleykeeper has been published yet?\r\n I hope someday you find out what happened to your daughter

Asked on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 07:57:42 AM
Reply: THE TALLY KEEPER has not yet been published.

My agent and I are in the process of exploring various options in an effort to decide what will give this book the best possible exposure.

Once a decision is made, I'll not only post it on this board, but will ask the help of all "Kait's Army" of supporters to help us promote it.

Covering up a Murder

Question: As to why police might cover up a murder: police and police officials might cover up murder that, if solved, might reveal embarrassing corruption or incompetence in the department. For example, in the Columbine school shootings, law enformcement delayed and delayed in releasing a promised report. Documents were "lost"; the existence of prior investigations into neighbor complaints about the two boys was denied. (See Dave Cullen's fine book "Columbine" for details about the investigation into the mass murder at the high school and into what police knew about the boys before the murders.)

Asked on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 02:55:45 PM
Reply: Your observation is right on target.

And it undoubtedly contributes to the reason why new, young, honest cops at APD, who surely catch on to what was done in a high profile case like Kait's if only through locker room talk, choose to keep their mouths shut. Their first commision is to protect the Blue Brotherhood and the reputation of the department that they are dedicated to devoting their lives to.

But then, once in a while, there is someone with the courage of Det. Cynthia Orr, who decides, "Enough is enough. This corruption can't be allowed to continue. This is not the reason I became a cop."

She is a hero in every sense of the word.

Kaitlyn Arquette's Murder

Question: Having just finished reading Who Killed my Daughter (required reading for my son's high school), I'm moved to ask why hasn't this story profiled on America's Most Wanted? Or did I miss it?? I did note it was featured on Unsolved Mysteries back in 1993, but John Walsh could do this justicetoday! What about a fingerprint from the beer can at the scene? And what about pressing for the dirty cop angle? Maybe the head guy was with the law himself!

As a mother of a daughter living in LA, the entire scenario of the underworld is so scarey.... we owe it to families everywhere to solve Kait's case...

Asked on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 09:10:13 AM
Reply: We did submit Kait's story to "America's Most Wanted." We were told that John Walsh depends upon police departments to collaborate with him on his stories. They said he would not use stories that presented the police in a negative way, because that would wreck his image with law enforcement and destroy his sources of information and access to case files.

I can understand that, although I wish it wasn't so.

The fingerprint on the beer can? Does it still exist? The "APD Evidence Room Scandal" a couple of years ago revealed that important information from the APD evidence room had been mysteriously disappearing for years. Some of that had monitarily value -- such as thousands of dollars worth of family jewelry and a plasma TV, evidence in a white collar crime, supposed to be returned to its owner, that APD instead took to the dump (?) because it allegedly had a crack in it.

Overview of NM police crime & corruption

Question: I had been watching this (police corruption) myself for ages and wondering why the media isn't saying anything much about it. It just amazes me, like Nikki Baca charged with DUI and involved in an accident, no ignition interlock, no time in jail, 5 days suspended (no doubt with pay) and right back out there writing tickets!!!! It just makes me sick. You've got a great site here but it ended in 06? You need to keep this going!

[From betterlife505@yahoo.com]

Asked on Monday, August 09, 2010 at 10:16:09 AM
Reply: By "ended in 06" I assume you mean the section about police corruption? No, of course, the corruption didn't end then. However, with the event of APD Evidence Room Scandal, and all the cops turning against each other and their superiors, and then the abrupt exposure of the concealed reports about the drug activities of NM's top VIPs extending back over 20 years, this became too much for us to keep up with. We no longer live in New Mexico and have to get such information on-line. When the Albq. Tribune went down, we lost a valuable resource.

So, we thought, "Well, what we've posted here will at least give people an idea of the corruption in NM law enforcement, and they can take it from there." To keep up with the everyday stuff, especially trying to follow it from afar, would consume our whole lives.

Any valid information about current corruption that you want to post on this message board would be not only acceptable but extremely welcome.

To "I don't understand"

Question: The same reason anyone would try to cover up a murder!
Police are no better, or more moral than the average person.

Asked on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 12:27:52 PM
Reply: What you say is true. But, in addition to that, they are under tremendous pressure from their superiors and from the police union to conform to the first rule learned at the police academy -- their first alliance is to The Blue Brotherhood.

Those who defy that rule, suffer. It takes a cop with real guts to stand up to that.

To quote from an article in the Albq. Journal:

"In a furious tirade, filled with profanity, one deputy chief warned his lieutenants that if they ever openly criticized the administration he would yank them from their command. One lieutenant taped that diatribe and filed a complaint with the City's Labor Management Relations Board.
"He was trying to intimidate us,” the lieutenant stated. “Others will not come forward because they are scared."

I don't understand

Question: Why would police ever want to cover up a murder?

Asked on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 06:44:50 AM
Reply: Some possible reasons:

1. The killer is a cop.

2. The killer is a relative or a close friend of a cop.

3. The killer works for the cops as a snitch and is herefore automatically protected.

4. The killer (or, more likely, the person who hired the actual killer) is a VIP, or the killer is a relative or close friend of the VIP.

5. The victim was involved in criminal activities that involved and/or were protected by certain cops.

6. The victim was hetro or homo sexually involved or having business dealings with a cop, and that fact would be exposed during a full investigation.

7. The case would be messy and complicated to solve and the cops are overloaded with more important cases (some high profile) and a quick case closure as an accident, suicide or "random shooting" will wipe it off the books.

8. The victim was an "unsavory" person, (drug dealer, gang member, prostitute) who probably got what he/she deserved and the investigation of the murder would take time, effort and money that the police department doesn't want to waste on such a person when there are "more deserving'"victims waiting in line for their cases to be solved.

9. It was a gang killing. Member of one gang killing another. Too complicated and dangerous to get involved in.

10. The suspects are difficult to locate or to interview, because they have another culture and speak a different language.

I'm sure there are additional possibilities, but these are the ones I'm personally aware of.

Perhaps it would help the average visitor to this board to better understand how widespread this situation is.

Kait's Killers

Question: Does your reward for information that will convict Kait's killers apply to the people who hired them as well as hired hit men?

Asked on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 12:23:36 PM
Reply: Definitely.

But it's a moot point. If one element is fingered, that person will plea bargain and turn on the others. Look at what happened with Ken Schultz, Raul Parra, Toby Martinez and Manny Aragon in 2008. When push came to shove, the other three turned against their long-time friend, Manny, without an instant's hesitation.

At the time of Kait's murder, Manny Aragon, (president pro tem of the NM State Senate) and Ken Schultz, (mayor of Albq.), were bosom buddies.

When people are backed to the wall, loyalties dissolve.

Question: Having an ending to the Tallykeeper is awesome news! I don't mean to sound crass, but was wondering if any of the information you received over the years had anything to do with the new developments and if anyone has a possible chance at the reward that was offered?

Asked on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 08:48:48 AM
Reply: It's too soon to tell.

The reward is for "new information that leads directly to the arrest and conviction of Kait's killers."
