Question: while this case is certainly not unique in general terms, or compared to the rest of the stories on this site, it is an outrage, nonetheless. The overall feeling is of complete apathy on the part of everyone who responded to the calls that day. How despicable that individuals entrusted to the well-being and safety of the public should take it upon themselves to play God and judge who is worthy of being saved and who can just be thrown away. It feels as though they have no understanding of the value of life, EVERY life. Then, to justify their failure to do their job, they coldly lie, cover for each other and turn the tragedy for victim's families into an unending search for truth.
My prayers are with you Cynthia, and with every person here who struggles for answers. Bonnie LaDue Asked on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 04:25:13 AM | | | | The Murders of All These Victims | | | Question: Mine is not a question, it is a comment as having a sister who I believed was murdered by the police, covered up and forgotten.
In reading all these cases there ARE common denominators of some of them:
All seem related to "other" activity that may involve police and/or gangs, or criminal organizations that may be protected by the police.
There are at least two laws that protect law enforcement "Barela" and the "Garrity" law that need to be looked at again with all these cases especially.
That autopsies are inconsistent -
That Jane Doe seems to be a stall tactic
That people as high up as the Governor do not want it as a statewide problem even though they are the overseerer of the State -
That in the end it is up to the families and friends to seek justice.
So why do we pay taxes to these entities that help murder our children, brothers, sisters, and friends? Any one that turns away from these cases is COMPLICIT.

We group the cases by state, so scroll down past the New Mexico cases to this Colorado case. Did Julie die of a heart attack or suffocate after being pepper sprayed, wrestled to the ground facedown, and cuffed by police? Why did cops refuse to investigate why she had been running, naked, down the highway, screaming for help, at 5 a.m. on a Sunday morning?
If you'd like to contact Julie's family, you can send e-mail c/o Real Crimes and we will forward them. | | | Paul Fitzjerrell | | | | Question: I just read this story and am just stunned. If it's not the corrupt police, the corrupt Medical Examiner (confused? really...washing hands that were bagged for evidence collection?)....it's a thing that most of us had never heard about, the Garrity Law, or all of the above, preventing justice for families in these cases. I agree with the family that the Garrity Law needs to be repealed, but on a federal level. One of the things that I have noticed since my own brother's story posted here, is that the difference in State laws makes it very hard for anyone to use success stories, such as Barb Thompsons, to make headway in our own case. My heart goes out to the Fitzjerrell family. Investigating agency -- Gallup Police Department, Gallup, NM. The suspect, Gallup Police Officer Mike Brandau's, own department deliberately allowed information from their Internal Affairs Investigation to become mixed with the criminal investigation, thus polluting the case and making it impossible to prosecute.
Read this case to learn about the Garrity Law, a device all cops can use to protect themselves from prosecution for admitted wrong doing. This is a MUST READ!

January 02, 2010
Daily News, Reporter, Jeff Barker
NAVARRE BEACH — The mother of a young man found dead nearly three years ago is teaming up with investigators from the JonBenet Ramsey case.
Melody Schmitt, believes someone murdered her son, Joshua Whittier, in February 2007, although the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office determined he drowned.
Whittier, 21, was found Feb. 18 at the water’s edge near Juana’s Pagoda after a Mardi Gras celebration on Navarre Beach. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office determined it was an accidental drowning and closed the case May 22.
Schmitt has continued to investigate the incident. Over the last two and a half years, she has presented information to the Sheriff’s Office, but says investigators won’t listen to her story.
A friend of Schmitt’s told her to talk to Lou Smit, a forensic specialist who worked on the JonBenet Ramsey case. Smit and Ollie Gray, both retired from law enforcement, do free follow-up investigations. They have been collecting evidence related to Whittier’s death for 7 or 8 months.
“A lot of times people can’t afford to have follow-up done on things,” Gray said. “Law enforcement a lot of times doesn’t have the manpower or experience.”
Gray said he doesn’t think Whittier’s death was an accident. His wallet was empty when his body was discovered, he said.
Gray also said lawmen identified other people’s DNA on Whittier’s pants but never took DNA samples from the people who were last with him.
“You don’t accidentally fall in the water and drown and have somebody else’s blood on you,” Gray said.
Schmitt said she thinks the Sheriff’s office has brushed her aside. She even moved to Colorado because she felt betrayed.
“It’s a cover-up,” Schmitt said. “My civil rights have been violated.”
Schmitt said she wants to bring national exposure to her story to pressure the Sheriff’s Office to re-open the investigation. She said she’s talking to “20/20” about airing a segment.
“It’s all gonna be exposed someday,” Schmitt said.

I've never been able to get help from anyone in law enforcement yet my doubts and sadness live on as strong as ever. I've played games with my mind as I'm sure anyone in this site have played trying to release this whole situation to God, or any good that will come from the universe. Relief doesn't come. Anxiety sleeps for a while then wakes again from a song on the rdio, a photo, a holiday, or the actual date that I last saw my son. He came home in his muddy pick-up to pick up something from his room. His buddy waited in the truck with the engine running..Broooks ran back out of the house and tried to leave without saying goodbye. I jokingly said "Oh no you don't...come and kiss your mother goodbye. he smiled his impish smile and came and kissed me goodbye. Then he jumped in his truck...drove off with the radio blasting. I watched him drive away and turn right on the corner...I felt sad that he was leaving for the day. I didn't know it was the last time I would ever see him alive except in my dreams. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my boy. i miss you and love you. I won't ever stop trying to get help to get the truth out. It is too easy to become so involved with our own heartbreaking unsolved cases that we can't think beyond them.
But we MUST think beyond them and become familiar with ALL these cases in order to make this Web site work. Like it or not, we are an extended family. There have been many times when my husband and I have been approached by a true crimes reporter or TV or radio show about doing a story about our daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette's, case. (Sometimes that worked out, sometimes it didn't.) But our immediate response was to ask them exactly what type of cases they were looking for. Then, because we know so much about ALL "our cases," we've been able to steer them toward other cases on the Web site that were appropriate for them, and they have contacted those families as well.
Please do this for each other. Consider it bread upon the waters. Someone may, in turn, do it for you.

The lie that was perpetuated that Causey overdosed on his dad's cancer drugs , and ignoring Powell's confession that he obtained morphine and oxycontin from Putch and his mom show how cases can be rail roaded. Asked on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 11:31:46 AM | | | | Lois/Kait | | | Question: Thank you for sharing your beautiful poem...it puts me in mind of the reason we celebrate Christmas and the hope we all have because of Bethlehem and the star that guided the shepherds and wise men. To you, Lois, and the other friends I have made on this site, I want to express my warmest gratitude for the support, compassion, and assistance unselfishly given as I have struggled with my own cross of despair and pain....may the star guide us all in the coming year and may you each have a very blessed Christmas.

That is the craziest thing I've ever heard.

Lois Duncan Arquette Asked on Saturday, December 05, 2009 at 09:41:46 AM | | Reply: THE FIRST CHRISTMAS WITHOUT HER
When I was young they used to tell
About a star that shone one night.
It led the Shepherds from their fields
And filled their paths with crystal light.
I loved the tale when I was small,
But now I am a woman grown.
I have walked far on lonely trails
And groped through darkness of my own.
I've learned, I hope, to brave the dark,
Yet sometimes still, when God seems far,
The house is still, the world's asleep,
And night is long and cold and deep,
I like to think about the star.
